The EQUI Approach

Today, we often find ourselves overwhelmed with wellness hacks, and endless lists of dos and don’ts. Amidst this whirlwind, EQUI aim to simplify things for you by helping you to replace your shelf of supplements. Not only this, but with every EQUI Formula, we aim for total body balance, optimising every system in your body. As we delve into the very essence of EQUI’s ethos in this blog, we invite you to join us on a journey. A journey that transcends fleeting health trends and digs deep into a holistic understanding of well-being. At the very core of our ethos lies a profound yet simple understanding: the unparalleled power of a body in balance. But what does 'balance' truly mean? It's not just about having a regular fitness routine or following a specific diet. Balance is the harmonious functioning of the body's 10 intricate systems, within each one of us, where each contributes to our overall health and wellness.

But here's the magic of the body – with the right nourishment and care, it has an innate ability to find its way back to balance. And this is where EQUI’s holistic approach to supplementation comes into play. Rather than offering symptomatic relief, each product is an expertly formulated supplement blend of premium bio-available nutrients aimed at restoring this balance, ensuring each of the body’s 10 systems are comprehensively nourished. What’s more, we understand that today, passion and philosophy alone aren't enough. There’s a need for concrete, empirical evidence. And this is where our rigorous scientific approach dovetails perfectly with our holistic ethos. Every ingredient that graces our formulations is backed by exhaustive research. But our responsibility doesn't stop at ensuring efficacy. The safety of these ingredients is paramount. Through an unyielding commitment to research and quality, we ensure that our products are both potent and safe, offering benefits that resonate with the unique needs of the female body. In essence, at EQUI we have a commitment to help each woman discover and embrace her best self. It’s about redefining wellness, moving away from transient health fads, and anchoring ourselves in holistic well-being.

The EQUI Ethos & Functional Medicine

At the heart of EQUI’s philosophy lies a profound understanding of the power of your body in balance. EQUI formulations are based on the principles of functional medicine, an evolving practice that seeks to understand and address the root causes of disease rather than simply treating or masking symptoms (1). Just as a tree shows signs of distress through its leaves, our body manifests health concerns in various ways. Every cycle, every mood swing, every skin outbreak is a sign – a hint from our body on deeper, systemic issues. The interconnectedness of our body underscores the importance of a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Functional medicine emphasises a personalised, patient-centred approach, treating the individual as an integrated whole. Similarly, EQUI is not just about addressing a singular concern but achieving overall balance, supporting each of the 10 systems in the body.

Each of the 10 systems, or 'pillars of health' are just as important as each other. The strength and resilience of these pillars depend not just on their individual robustness, but on the synergistic strength they draw from each other. When these systems receive the nourishment they crave to function at their prime, the results are palpable. There's a surge of energy, a mental clarity, and a radiant glow that’s more than skin deep – it's the embodiment of true health. This is the fundamental ethos that EQUI’s formulations aim to address. By ensuring each system is nourished and supported, the body can perform at its optimal level, reflecting health both inside and out. Every ingredient that makes its way into our Formulas undergoes rigorous scrutiny, ensuring it aligns with our commitment to holistic women's health. The meticulous approach is grounded in a vast array of scientific evidence, ensuring both the efficacy and safety of every Formula.

EQUI champions the idea that optimal health is achieved not through isolated efforts but through a holistic, concerted approach that recognises the importance of every single system in our body. All you need to do is choose the Formula specifically for your current needs. Take our quiz to find your Formula.

Your Body in Balance

Our body, in its vast complexity, is an intricate web of interconnected systems. An imbalance in one area can create a domino effect, influencing other systems and compromising overall wellbeing. For instance, a hormonal imbalance might manifest through skin issues, while poor digestion could affect energy levels. Recognising this interconnectedness, EQUI Formulas are meticulously formulated to support each of these ten systems. Rather than isolating issues, we take a holistic approach, understanding that achieving balance in one system can positively ripple through to others. Our aim? To bring the body into its natural state of equilibrium, true to the very name ‘EQUI’. With our comprehensive Formulas, every facet of your body works in harmony, ensuring you feel and function at your best. Here, we delve into the importance of each of the ten systems in the body, shedding light on how EQUI supports each system and ultimately, gets your body in balance:

1.Digestion

The digestive system, often referred to as our 'second brain', plays a pivotal role beyond merely breaking down food. Recent studies have highlighted its significant connection with the nervous system. The gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication channel, links the emotional and cognitive centres of the brain with the intestinal functions (2). What’s more, around 90% of the body's serotonin, which regulates mood, appetite, and sleep, is produced in the digestive tract. Given the critical role of serotonin in promoting stable moods and energy, any disruption in the gut can have pronounced effects on our mental well-being. Therefore, maintaining a healthy gut is essential not just for physical health but also for mental equilibrium. However, the gut's role doesn't stop at neurotransmitter production. Proper digestion is imperative for the optimal absorption of nutrients. Even the most nutritionally dense diet can fall short if the body is unable to break down and use these nutrients. Poor digestion not only leads to malnourishment at a cellular level but also presents a host of symptoms. Sluggish digestion is linked to various conditions, from bloating and acne to more severe issues like hormonal imbalances and weight gain. Our Formulas provide comprehensive gut support, owing to the inclusion of pre and probiotics, digestive enzymes, and specific nutrients such as glutamine, flaxseed, and turmeric, which aid its integrity and reduce inflammation. What’s more, recognising its profound interconnectedness with other systems ensures we give it the attention it rightfully deserves, paving the way for both physical and mental well-being.

2.Detoxification

In our modern world, we are exposed daily to an array of environmental toxins - from pollutants in the air to additives in our food or even alcohol. While our bodies have natural mechanisms to cope with these potentially harmful compounds, ensuring efficient detoxification and excretion is paramount to protect our cells and maintain optimal health. The liver and kidneys serve as primary detoxification powerhouses. The liver processes toxins, preparing them for safe elimination from the body. The kidneys further assist in this purification process by filtering the bloodstream, removing waste products, and excess substances to be excreted in the urine. Given the essential functions of these organs, their health and efficiency directly influence our overall wellbeing. Recent studies have underlined the importance of supporting liver and kidney function through dietary and supplementary means. For instance, specific nutrients like milk thistle for the liver and dandelion root for the kidneys have been identified as powerful aids in supporting their detoxification capacities (3,4), which are present in some Formulas. By specifically nurturing the liver and kidneys with targeted supplementary nutrients, we can bolster our body's innate detoxification mechanisms. This proactive approach not only ensures the efficient elimination of harmful compounds but also supports overall vitality and wellbeing.

3.Hormones

Hormones are intricate chemical messengers that serve as the linchpin to our body's functions. From regulating our sleep-wake cycles and energy production to determining our moods and monthly reproductive cycles, hormones, in their balanced state, ensure the harmony of our physiological processes. A balanced hormonal system doesn't merely mean the absence of mood swings or regular periods. It's important for our metabolism, our energy levels, our emotional stability, and the quality of our sleep. Significantly, emerging research has highlighted the profound interplay between nutrition and hormonal homeostasis. Certain nutrients, including B6 and specific adaptogens, have been identified as powerful facilitators in supporting hormonal equilibrium. For example, vitamin B6, plays a pivotal role in the production of neurotransmitters that influence mood and help alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) (5). B6 is crucial in promoting the health of the nervous system and bolstering immune function, which, in turn, lends itself to balanced hormonal activity. Then, we have adaptogens, a unique class of herbs that support the body's resistance to stress, both physical and emotional, which may disrupt our hormonal balance by triggering the release of cortisol, our stress hormone. The adaptogen ashwagandha has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and therefore modulate the body's stress response (6). EQUI recognises the instrumental role of B6 and ashwagandha in cultivating hormonal balance. By incorporating these ingredients into our products, we harness the healing power of nutrition. When our hormonal systems receive the right kind of sustained support, we can effectively counteract the inherent stresses of modern life, ensuring a cascade of benefits from improved digestion and brain function to enhanced immunity.

4.Skin

Our skin plays a dual role: it's our first line of defence against external aggressors, and a revealing indicator of our internal health. Its texture, tone, and vitality are intertwined with our gut health, hormonal equilibrium, immune responses, and even our emotional states. To truly nurture our skin from the inside out, a holistic approach is essential. It's not merely about hydration and UV protection but feeding it a cocktail of nutrients from the inside out, tailored for its unique needs. The skin is where EQUI began with our award-winning and celebrity endorsed Beauty Formula which contains proprietary blend Glow Curtis®, which is a power-packed blend designed with women's skin in mind. Each component of Glow Curtis® helps get the skin back into balance and includes hyaluronic acid, type 1 marine collagen peptides, zinc, vitamin C, pine bark extract, resveratrol & silica, which work together to support every stage of the skin cell cycle, strengthening and helping to counteract premature skin ageing. Yet, we haven’t stopped there, we have ensured that each Formula is poised to provide women with the full spectrum of essential skin targeted and bio-available multivitamins and minerals, promising skin that's not only clear and youthful but resilient, reflective of optimal internal health.

5.Reproduction

The intricacies of reproduction and libido is underpinned by numerous physiological processes. These processes require optimal nourishment, and EQUI, understanding the profound implications of this system on overall well-being, has formulated products that encompass essential nutrients for reproductive health. Central to EQUI's commitment is the inclusion of hormone-balancing nutrients. Hormonal balance is pivotal not just for conception, but also for maintaining a healthy libido and ensuring regular menstrual cycles. Vitamins and minerals like vitamin D, zinc, and vitamin C play indispensable roles in hormonal regulation and fertility. For instance, vitamin D is associated with improved fertility and is essential for the development of the foetus (7). Zinc, on the other hand, plays a role in cell division and DNA synthesis, ensuring proper foetal development. Beyond hormones, the gut's health is intricately linked with reproductive health. EQUI's incorporation of probiotics in most Formulas promotes a healthy gut flora, with studies suggesting a direct link between gut health and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (8). Finally, achieving quality sleep is indispensable for hormonal balance and overall reproductive health. Magnesium glycinate, featured in each EQUI Formula, is a compound known for its calming properties, promoting deeper sleep, and, in turn, a healthier hormonal profile (9). For those looking to support preconception, pregnancy and the post-natal period, our Pregnancy Formula has you covered. Not only does this Formula support fertility and reproduction at its very core, but it will help support your body through the many changes seen throughout pregnancy, helping you navigate this time with ease. In essence, EQUI recognises the profound interconnectedness of the body’s systems. Through meticulous ingredient selection and formulation, our Formulas promise holistic support for women's reproductive health, not just addressing fertility but ensuring a comprehensive life force balance.

6.Energy

Our vitality highlights internal health, reflecting how adequately the body is being nourished and whether metabolic processes are functioning seamlessly. The complex intricacy of energy metabolism demands a full spectrum of nutrients, with certain vitamins and minerals playing pivotal roles. EQUI, recognising the profound implications of this system on overall well-being, ensures a meticulous incorporation of some key nutrients in our formulations. Central to the energy equation are B vitamins. These water-soluble nutrients have direct involvement in energy production, converting our food into fuel, maintaining optimal energy levels. A deficiency in even one of these vitamins can have detrimental effects on energy metabolism (10). Alongside the B vitamins, magnesium plays a paramount role. As a cofactor in over 300 enzyme systems, it directly impacts energy production at a cellular level, facilitating the conversion of glucose into usable energy. Studies have consistently highlighted that magnesium deficiency correlates with reduced energy levels and increased fatigue (11). Furthermore, the thyroid gland's health is paramount in energy regulation. Selenium and iodine are essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolic rate, temperature, and overall energy production. Impairment in thyroid function due to insufficiencies in these minerals can manifest as fatigue or decreased stamina (12). Our Formulas with their comprehensive inclusion of B vitamins, magnesium, selenium, and iodine, provide a holistic approach to ensuring optimal energy levels, no matter what life stage you are at. This full-spectrum nutritional support not only ensures efficient metabolic processes but also underscores our commitment to bolstering vitality, energy, and overall health.

7.Musculo-skeletal

The musculoskeletal system, composed of bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles, not only grants us mobility but also provides our body with its foundational framework. Maintaining this system's integrity is paramount for our physical strength, agility, and stamina. Yet our body's robustness leans heavily on the nutrients we provide it. EQUI recognises this deep connection, and in our Formulas, we bring together essential nutrients that seamlessly cater to the musculoskeletal health. For example, vitamin D, often termed the 'sunshine vitamin', plays a pivotal role not just in bone health but also in muscle function. Its adequacy ensures optimum calcium absorption, a key mineral for bone density, thus preventing conditions like osteoporosis (13). Moreover, vitamin D is also linked to improved muscle function, with deficiencies often correlated with muscle weakness. Calcium is undeniably the cornerstone for strong bones. It provides structural rigidity, thereby ensuring our skeletal framework is resilient against fractures. Regular adequate intake, especially when combined with vitamin D, is protective against age-related bone density decline (14). Our commitment to holistically supporting the musculoskeletal system is evident in our inclusion of vitamin D and calcium in every Formula. By doing so, we provide you with a nuanced synergy of nutrients that enhances structural integrity, ensuring you remain agile, robust, and vibrant.

8.Immunity

Today, where challenges to our health lurk at every corner, the significance of a robust immune system cannot be overstated. Our immunity stands as a sentinel, warding off viruses and bacteria, counteracting inflammation, and guarding against environmental toxins and intolerances. A sturdy immune system ensures our survival, health, and vitality. Recognising this, we have meticulously crafted our Formulas with paramount nutrients to support immunity. Again, vitamin D, also associated with bone health, has garnered attention for its multifaceted role in immunity. Research has pinpointed its crucial function in modulating both the innate and adaptive immune responses, making it vital for immune resilience (15). Vitamin A is another key nutrient for the immune system, of which 70% resides in the gut. It is pivotal in maintaining the gut lining, which serves as the body's primary physical barrier to infections (16). Meanwhile zinc, supports the growth and function of different immune cells, and even mild deficiencies can impair immune function. Finally, vitamin C, beyond its antioxidant and skin-boosting properties, aids various cellular functions of the immune system. Studies have highlighted its ability to enhance resistance against pathogens and bolster the skin's defence system (17). Each EQUI Formula, with these potent nutrients, has your immune support covered. By integrating vitamin D, A, zinc, and vitamin C into all our Formulas, we not only underscore our commitment to immune health but also fortifies your body's inherent defence mechanisms.

9.Cardio-vascular

At our very core lies the circulatory system that sustains every cell, every organ, and every function. This system's efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients is necessary for optimal health and vitality. EQUI has channelled scientific research and nutritional wisdom into creating formulas enriched with specific nutrients that are not only vital for immediate health but also safeguard our well-being for longevity. Foremost among these nutrients is Omega-3 fatty acids, known for their cardio-protective properties. Research has consistently shown that they can decrease triglyceride levels, reduce blood pressure, and support heart health (18). Our Oil Editions including Beauty, Pregnancy and Menopause Oils all contain super bioavailable levels of pure omega 3. Magnesium, another inclusion in each EQUI Formula, plays an instrumental role in maintaining heart rhythm and muscle function. Studies suggest that adequate magnesium levels can prevent high blood pressure and guard against heart diseases (19). What’s more, vitamin K2, a lesser-known nutrient, has been spotlighted for its ability to direct calcium to the bones and prevent it from depositing in the arteries, promoting arterial health and flexibility (20). Finally, antioxidants like Vitamin C and E, pivotal ingredients in our Formulas, safeguard the cardiovascular system from oxidative stress (21). So, EQUI presents a holistic format in supporting the heart, lungs, circulation, and muscular systems, promoting health and vitality and longevity.

10.Nervous System/Brain

The human brain and its accompanying nervous system is unmatched in its complexity and functionality. Commanding tasks ranging from our most basic reflexes to the profound depths of our emotions, memories, and desires, this system sits at the helm of our existence. Given its integral role, EQUI recognises the significance of delivering targeted nutrition to safeguard the optimal functioning of this cerebral powerhouse. Central to EQUI's formulations is the inclusion of Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), which has been highlighted for its paramount role in cognitive health. Research has underscored the significance of DHA in improving memory, mood, and preventing cognitive decline (22). B vitamins, notably B6, B9, and B12, are also part of each Formulas intricate blend. These vitamins are pivotal in the synthesis of neurotransmitters and protection of nerve cells. A study found that consistent supplementation with B vitamins can significantly reduce brain atrophy and improve cognitive function (23). Moreover, the antioxidant properties of Vitamin E, are essential for protecting nerve cells from oxidative stress, potentially delaying cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases (24). To ensure the holistic nourishment of the nervous system, EQUI also incorporates magnesium, which has been associated with improved synaptic plasticity, enhancing learning and memory processes in the brain (25). In curating these powerful nutrients, EQUI endeavours to sustain the intricate harmony of our brain and nervous system. Their inclusion echoes the importance of nurturing our neural circuitry for a life characterised by clarity, vitality, and equilibrium.

The Skin-Gut-Hormone Connection

Skin, the largest organ in the human body, is often referred to as the 'mirror' of our internal health. This external layer doesn't merely serve as a barrier to the external environment, but it offers insights into the state of our internal health. The interplay between the gut and the skin, as well as the hormonal interactions with the skin, illustrates the intertwined relationships within our body systems. This relationship is termed the 'gut-skin axis' and is at the core of EQUI’s philosophy. Emerging research indicates that a dysbiotic gut microbiome can be a major contributor to various skin disorders. For instance, the role of the gut in conditions like acne and rosacea is being intensively investigated. A recent study discovered that those with acne had a distinct gut microbiota composition compared to those without the condition, hinting at the potential influence of gut health on acne (26).

Furthermore, hormonal balance is pivotal for optimal skin health. Imbalances, particularly in hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, can manifest externally as skin disorders. One prominent example is hormonal acne, which often surfaces during specific phases in the menstrual cycle or due to conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Research has highlighted the correlation between hormonal imbalances and the onset of acne in adult women (27). And it doesn’t end there - the gut and hormones are inextricably connected. The gut microbiota plays a role in the metabolism of hormones, thereby affecting their balance. Disruptions in the gut microbiome can directly impact hormonal health. In another study, it was demonstrated that gut bacteria can influence the levels of certain sex hormones, which then can affect conditions like PCOS (28).

EQUI was developed with the understanding and knowledge that the skin's appearance can be a window to our internal health, reflecting imbalances and disruptions in the body. By recognising this intricate relationship, we understand the importance of holistic health approaches, which nurture not just our exterior health but pay equal attention to our internal systems. And this is the very reason EQUI was founded! EQUI formulations are designed to offer comprehensive support, ensuring a healthy gut environment, which in turn fosters hormonal EQUI-librium. Find your Formula here.

Our Origin and Evolution

Our story began with two lifelong friends, Alice and Rosie, and a pivotal lightbulb moment ten years ago. Rosie, a young professional, was navigating the hustle of Canary Wharf, embodying the typical fast-paced and stressful lifestyle synonymous with London’s buzzing corporate scene. Amidst the chaos, a personal challenge persisted – hormonal breakouts that had been her bane ever since she stopped taking the pill. Traditional remedies and treatments came to nothing.

Enter Alice, a seasoned and well-regarded nutritional therapist with a keen focus on women’s health. With her in-depth knowledge and bespoke recommendations, she introduced Rosie to a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, gut-nourishing components, potent herbs, and superfoods. The objective was not just to address Rosie’s skin issues but to cater to her holistic health, aiming to rejuvenate every internal system and cultivate internal harmony.

The results were nothing short of transformative. In just a month, Rosie didn’t just witness a remarkable improvement in her skin but felt an overall vitality. The lingering clouds of fatigue dissipated, replaced by newfound energy. She felt balanced, calm, strong, and in control. However, this new regimen, albeit effective, was intricate.

That’s when the idea struck – what if this holistic, transformative approach could be streamlined and made accessible to all? What if there was a singular product that could encapsulate the myriad benefits of a full-spectrum supplement, tailored to nourish the entire body?

Fuelled by this vision, we embarked on a passionate quest. Two years of relentless research, trials, and formulation led to the birth of EQUI, designed with the singular ethos of achieving body equilibrium. From the success of our inaugural product, Beauty Formula, to the now widely celebrated and award-winning Menopause Formula that has served as a beacon of balance for thousands of women, EQUI’s journey stands testament to the power of holistic nutrition and the profound impact of internal balance on overall well-being.
